Survival games are getting a little more comfortable. Mayday: The Survival Island, a hand-drawn open-world adventure from Brazilian indie studio Pequi Studios, launches today on Steam, blending traditional survival mechanics with farming, crafting, exploration, and a surprising emphasis on making a house feel like home.

After crash-landing on a mysterious archipelago, players must make the best of what washes ashore. Hunting, fishing, gathering resources, and building basic shelter are just the beginning. The world features 24 handcrafted islands filled with unique environments, hidden resources, forgotten ruins, and mysteries waiting to be uncovered.

There’s plenty to keep aspiring homesteaders busy, too. Players can grow crops, raise sheep, herd buffalo, cook meals, and unlock new crafting stations, tools, and even potions. But Mayday has one particularly interesting twist: decorating your home actually makes you better at surviving.

Its Comfort system rewards players for furnishing their homes with everything from tables and chairs to rugs, vases, and decorative touches. A more comfortable home provides practical survival bonuses, including increased health and slower energy drain. In other words, a well-decorated living room might be just as valuable as a well-stocked pantry.

Exploration is equally important. Each of the 24 islands was hand-drawn and individually stocked with resources, encouraging players to venture beyond familiar territory. Misty swamps, forgotten cemeteries, beaches, and ancient ruins offer new discoveries, while mysterious symbols and magical totems hint at a much bigger story beneath the surface.

Developed by a three-person team in Goiânia, Brazil, Mayday: The Survival Island also reflects Pequi Studios’ commitment to its local creative community, including playtesting with students studying game development.

Mayday: The Survival Island is available now on Steam for $13.99, with a limited-time 20% launch discount.
