Electronic music pioneer, producer, and activist Moby has once again redefined the boundaries of his artistry with the release of Always Centered at Night Remixes, a sprawling two-disc, 58-track opus now available via Mute Records. This ambitious project follows a sold-out EU/UK tour in September 2024 celebrating 25 years of his seminal album Play, the release of the original Always Centered at Night album in June, and the intimate Quiet Home DJ Mix.
Leading the charge is the mesmerizing “Wild Flame (Dark1 Remix)”, featuring ethereal vocals by Danaé. This cosmic reimagining pairs her shimmering voice with loose congas, intricate rhythms, and spacey synths, breathing fresh life into the original. Speaking about the remixes, Moby shared, “I felt that the collaborations on Always Centered at Night were each so special that I wanted to create remixes to give the vocals as many sonic backgrounds as possible.”
An Album Unlike Any Other
Even in Moby’s storied career, Always Centered at Night stands apart. The original album boasts 13 remarkable collaborations, featuring both well-known artists and rising talents. Among its standout moments is the lead single, “Dark Days”, featuring the soulful and commanding voice of Lady Blackbird. Her alluring vocals deliver a defiant and rhythmic punch that has quickly become a fan favorite.
Other highlights include the hauntingly beautiful “On Air,” with avant-garde vocalist serpentwithfeet, and the powerful spoken-word piece “Where Is Your Pride?” featuring the late poet Benjamin Zephaniah, underscored by propulsive breakbeats. Reflecting on this track, Moby said, “As a vegan activist, and as a wise and compassionate man, Benjamin inspired me for many years. I hope that ‘Where Is Your Pride?’ honors his legacy and draws attention to his life, work, and principles.”
Additional collaborators on the original album include Sudanese-Dutch chanteuse Gaidaa on the evocative “Transit,” Burundian-born London-based artist J.P. Bimeni, and Kingston-raised, London-based artist Aynzli Jones, each bringing their unique artistry to the project.
A Return to the Spirit of Discovery
The Always Centered at Night project, which Moby launched in 2022, channels the eclectic and idiosyncratic spirit of New York’s record shops from the late 1980s—spaces that exposed him to unexpected and transformative sounds. In his own words, the initiative is about “working with special writers and vocalists to make songs inspired by the spirit of musical discovery.”
Moby, a multi-platinum-selling and award-winning artist, is as much known for his groundbreaking music as for his animal rights activism and thought-provoking writing. With the release of Always Centered at Night Remixes, he continues to push artistic boundaries, offering fans an extraordinary sonic journey through reimagined collaborations.
The 58-track remix album, Always Centered at Night Remixes, is available now via Mute—an unmissable addition to the discography of an artist who remains at the forefront of innovation.
