Austin’s The Animeros are keeping the dancefloor alive with the release of “Descarga Royal,” an irresistible, psychedelic cumbia jam that sets the tone for their upcoming debut album, ¡Qué Bárbaro!, arriving August 28 via Easy Eye Sound.
A staple opener at the band’s live shows, “Descarga Royal” is a vibrant reimagining of a classic by Peru’s Los Royals de Pucallpa. The track gives the trio room to stretch out with soaring psychedelic solos while cranking the energy to full throttle. It’s accompanied by a lively new video filmed during their recent Chicago stop supporting The Black Keys, capturing both the band’s electric performance and their affection for the Windy City.
The buzz around The Animeros has been building fast. Their previous single, “La Camita,” earned praise from NPR Music’s Alt.Latino and other tastemakers, while the band’s unique blend of cumbia, Latin soul, chicha, and psychedelic rock continues to turn heads. That sound even caught the attention of producer Dan Auerbach, who famously discovered the group after hearing them perform from a rooftop during SXSW before signing them to Easy Eye Sound.
Made up of Mauro Lopez, Nicolas Sánchez, and Nick Tozzo, the Austin trio brings years of experience from the city’s rich Latin music scene into a fresh, cinematic style that feels equally inspired by vintage Latin rhythms, Spaghetti Westerns, and desert road trips.
Following hometown album release shows at Waterloo Records (August 27) and the Continental Club (August 28), The Animeros will hit the West Coast on a headlining tour celebrating the release of ¡Qué Bárbaro!. If “Descarga Royal” is any indication, audiences should be ready to dance.
