Cleopatra Entertainment has announced the release of the official documentary Beyond Trainspotting: The World of Irvine Welsh, an intimate and unflinching portrait of one of modern literature’s most distinctive voices.

Welsh, whose 1993 debut novel Trainspotting exploded into a global cultural phenomenon, narrates his own journey—from his birth in a Leith tenement in 1958 to worldwide acclaim. Along the way, he reflects on personal tragedies, brushes with death, failed attempts at forming “bedroom bands,” and the winding road to becoming a groundbreaking author.

Following Trainspotting’s success and its iconic 1996 film adaptation by Danny Boyle, Welsh’s works—including The Acid HouseFilth, and Crime—have captivated audiences through their adaptations and unmistakable blend of dark humor, grit, and Scottish vernacular. The documentary also offers a glimpse into upcoming projects, including a stage musical based on Trainspotting.

Beyond Trainspotting features appearances from a host of Welsh’s admirers and collaborators. Producer Andrew Macdonald, Creation Records founder Alan McGee, and punk legend Iggy Pop weigh in on his cultural impact, while Ewan McGregor (TrainspottingMoulin RougeStar Wars’ Obi-Wan Kenobi) shares his personal connection to the author’s work. The film also spotlights Britpop voices including Lisa Moorish, Kirsty Allison, and members of Primal Scream.

“Welsh’s salty reflections on his near-death experiences, being in various failed ‘bedroom bands’ and his troubled path to becoming a breakthrough author are riveting and illuminating,” writes David Fleming of The Conversation.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to his world, Beyond Trainspotting promises a raw, revealing journey through the mind and legacy of Irvine Welsh.
