Universal Pictures is celebrating the 20th anniversary of DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar with a nationwide theatrical re-release beginning January 16, 2026. The animated comedy, led by the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, and Jada Pinkett Smith, returns for a limited engagement, inviting a new generation—and longtime fans—back to its wildly funny world.

Released in 2005, Madagascar became a global hit thanks to its fast-paced humor, lovable characters, and irresistible soundtrack. The story follows Alex the lion, the self-proclaimed “King of New York,” and his zoo-dwelling friends Marty, Gloria, and Melman as a birthday wish and a daring escape send them far from Central Park to the untamed shores of Madagascar. There, dancing lemurs, scheming penguins, and a funky King Julien turn their lives upside down.

The film went on to earn nearly $200 million in North America and launch a billion-dollar franchise, including two sequels and the Penguins of Madagascar spin-off. With music by Hans Zimmer and the unforgettable “I Like to Move It,” Madagascar remains a joyful, high-energy favorite.

Now, two decades later, it’s ready to move it all over again—on the big screen where it belongs.
