Sometimes the biggest acts of heroism happen in the most unexpected places. HBO is bringing one remarkable story of survival, kindness, and holiday spirit to the screen with The Buffalo Miracle, a new documentary short debuting November 24.
Directed by two-time Academy Award winner Ben Proudfoot (The Last Repair Shop, The Queen of Basketball), the film recounts the extraordinary events of Christmas Eve 2022, when a devastating blizzard brought Buffalo, New York, to a standstill.
With hurricane-force winds, more than four feet of snow, and emergency services struggling to reach stranded residents, a McDonald’s manager made an extraordinary decision: keep the restaurant open, despite corporate rules, and offer shelter to anyone who needed help.
What followed was an unexpected story of community. A group of complete strangers found themselves sharing warmth, food, and companionship inside the restaurant. Among them were an injured father caring for his infant daughter, a young man with Down syndrome spending Christmas away from his mother, a couple separated from their families, and immigrant nail salon owners caught in the storm.
As the blizzard continued outside, the unlikely group gathered around a laptop to watch the Buffalo Bills take on the Chicago Bears, finding a little hope and comfort in a Christmas Eve nobody would soon forget.
Combining firsthand accounts from survivors with hand-drawn animation, The Buffalo Miracle explores how one decision to help others turned an ordinary fast-food restaurant into a lifeline for people in desperate need.
The documentary premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and is the latest installment in HBO’s NFL Shorts documentary series.
The Buffalo Miracle premieres Tuesday, November 24, from 9:00–9:37 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
