A new feature documentary chronicling the life and legacy of Gregg Allman will arrive in U.S. theaters this summer. Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul, announced by Subtext in association with Rolling Stone Films, is scheduled for a nationwide release on Wednesday, June 17.

The rollout will include week-long theatrical engagements in Los Angeles and New York City, alongside one-night-only screenings across the country. The film marks the directorial effort of James Keach, whose previous credits include acclaimed music documentaries and narrative features.

Two premiere events will precede the release. A June 9 screening at Gramercy Theatre will feature an acoustic performance by Devon Allman and Duane Betts. A second event follows on June 11 at the Grand Opera House, including an appearance by Chuck Leavell. Both screenings will include Q&A sessions with the filmmakers.

The documentary offers an in-depth portrait of Allman, co-founder of The Allman Brothers Band, tracing his trajectory from personal tragedy to musical innovation. Drawing on archival footage, interviews, and live performances, the film explores key moments including the death of his brother Duane Allman and his struggles with addiction.

Beyond biography, the film examines the band’s cultural impact, particularly its role in shaping Southern rock and challenging racial divisions through musical collaboration. It also addresses Allman’s complex public life, including his marriage to Cher.

Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul inaugurates Subtext’s entry into film distribution, signaling a broader focus on music-driven storytelling and artist-centered narratives.
