Atlanta upstart BabyDrill releases a new single, “Watchin Now,” with a music video and teases the release of an upcoming body of work called ScoreGod. “Watchin Now” follows BabyDrill’s previously released single “Express Myself” and album, MadMan, which was released this past June.
BabyDrill has become a local celebrity in Atlanta since his song “32 Freestyle” took off a couple of years ago while he was incarcerated. He’s not keeping it local, though, as he is currently wrapping a tour in Europe supporting one of his mentors, 21 Savage. Young Nudy and 21 Savage aren’t the only stars paying attention, though. Drill also recently linked up with Latto for her song “ISSA PARTY” in September, joined The Kid Laroi’s “WHATS THE MOVIE?” on his sophomore album THE FIRST TIME and featured on Quavo’s “Stain” from his album Rocket Power. BabyDrill’s energy has proven to be magnetic, as evidenced by the rapid growth of his fanbase and respect amongst his artist peers as well.
As BabyDrill tells it, we’ve all got different personalities; he just happens to use his to craft anthems. In the span of a verse, the Atlanta rapper will flip from mean and snub-nosed, to funny and heartfelt, to downright monstrous, pushing all his emotions to the max. Under the wing of Young Nudy, he has become a prodigious rapper who puts together records like a tastemaker, burrowing into a warped, oddball sound that feels like looking at Atlanta rap through a crystal ball. Raised in West Atlanta by his mom and older sisters, BabyDrill was always the black sheep, so he always did things his way.
BabyDrill initially garnered buzz in Atlanta with his breakout song “32 Freestyle.” The word started getting out locally, but BabyDrill couldn’t immediately reap the rewards, though. Soon after “32 Freestyle” dropped, Drill was arrested. His release on bond was accompanied by his debut project, Drill Season, compiled mostly from older material, which balances big, brassy trap and blockbuster features (Latto, G Herbo) with softer melodic moments like “War Wounds.” The next six months, while on house arrest, Drill would spend nearly every waking moment at the studio. He claims he recorded 900 songs in that stretch, with the first result of that period being his MadMan album that was released in the summer of 2023, right after he beat the case and was cleared of all charges. With a new outlook on life and a buzzing rap career, BabyDrill is focused on the future and also slowing down to enjoy the now. In line with that approach, Drill promises a more mellowed-out side of himself on his next release, ScoreGod, the forthcoming EP that is set to arrive in December via PDE.
