If you’ve ever wondered what a Souls-like game would feel like with six-shooters instead of swords, Guns of Eschaton might have your name on it.
Publisher 4Divinity and developer Eschatology Entertainment have officially unveiled the first-person shooter, blending punishing Souls-like combat with a mystical take on the Old West. The game also carries extra significance as the final original universe envisioned by the late Viktor Antonov, the legendary art director whose work helped define Half-Life 2 and Dishonored.
Set in a dying, apocalyptic version of 19th-century America, players will journey from the Wild West to the East Coast, where every encounter is designed to be a deadly test of preparation and survival. Forget running in guns blazing—ammo is scarce, enemies hit hard, and every bullet truly matters.
Combat revolves around studying foes with the Codex, exploiting enemy weaknesses, mastering perfectly timed parries and dashes, and making smart use of specialised ammunition and occult powers. Along the way, players can tailor their gunslinger with a deep progression system featuring firearms, talismans, armour, consumables, and supernatural abilities that encourage a variety of builds.
The haunting frontier itself is another major draw, combining classic Western iconography with occult horror in a world shaped by Antonov’s unmistakable artistic vision. Better still, the adventure can be tackled solo or in full co-op, with shared progression allowing friends to brave the apocalypse together.
With its unique blend of Souls-like tension, first-person gunplay, and a beautifully bleak Western setting, Guns of Eschaton is already shaping up to be one of the more intriguing genre mashups on the horizon.
