New York post-rock duo halfway up a jagged hill are sharpening the edges of their debut with “Silver Sword,” the latest and final preview from their forthcoming album, HUAJH, due September 10 via Vinegar Hill Sound Records. Pre-orders are available now.
Built around gritty, downtuned riffs and poignant lyrics, “Silver Sword” traces a path from suffering toward healing and, ultimately, empowerment. The track moves with a heavy momentum before slowing into a melancholy acceptance, turning its central image—the blade—from a symbol of harm into one of protection.
“The song has three parts, akin to suffering, healing, and empowerment,” the band explains. “The last lyric of the chorus, ‘now your blade is used for good,’ transforms the blade from a tool of harm to one of protection.”
That idea fits neatly into HUAJH, an album preoccupied with pain, recovery and regeneration. Across its songs, halfway up a jagged hill blend post-rock heft with elements of metal, emo, slowcore and experimental music, creating a sound that can hit hard while still leaving room to breathe. Influences including Pile, Liturgy, Envy, Hella and Debussy surface along the way, but the Brooklyn duo’s approach is distinctly their own.
