Square Enix just gave Final Fantasy fans another reason to get excited: a free demo for FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is now available, offering a first taste of the series’ upcoming HD-2D adventure.
Revealed during Sony’s State of Play, the latest trailer also dropped a major surprise: Sephiroth is in the game. Players can track down and challenge the legendary villain, with victory potentially unlocking a special reward.
The demo lets players explore the Kingdom of Grandshelt through the opening and first chapter—roughly 3–5 hours of gameplay. Better yet, your save data carries over to the full game when it launches October 22, 2026.
As the first HD-2D entry in the Final Fantasy series, Resonance blends pixel-art nostalgia with modern presentation and gameplay. Expect strategic turn-based battles, chocobos, espers and airships, alongside appearances from fan favorites including Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light.
The game draws from the first story arc of FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS, but Square Enix says this is far more than a straight port—it has been extensively rebuilt as a full console-quality RPG.
The free demo is available now on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Xbox on PC. Pre-orders are also open ahead of the October 22 launch.
And yes, Sephiroth is waiting. Good luck.
