My Chemical Romance is bringing the world of The Black Parade to life in a new way. The band has teamed up with visual artist and filmmaker Lauren Tsai for ‘Prelude to The End,’ a collaborative short film that blends the band’s iconic music with Tsai’s imaginative animated universe, The Dying World.
Available to watch now, the film arrives alongside the release of The Black Parade (20th Anniversary), celebrating two decades of the band’s landmark album.
Directed by Tsai, the story follows Astrid, the protagonist of The Dying World, through an unsettling New England boarding school overtaken by trash. When the school attempts to take away her cherished sketchbook, Astrid falls down a trash chute into a strange world inhabited by forgotten ideas. What follows is a surreal journey exploring creativity, identity, youth, and the determination to express one’s true self.
The film features a surprisingly stacked voice cast. Tsai voices Astrid, joined by Billie Eilish, Phoebe Bridgers, Hideo Kojima, and John C. McGinley, among others. The soundtrack incorporates a live performance of Pascal Dusapin’s Flying River, Violin Concerto, recorded by Utopia Orchestra.
For Tsai, the collaboration is something of a full-circle moment. She grew up creating animated fan videos set to My Chemical Romance songs, citing the band’s visual storytelling and creative universe as major influences on her own artistic development. Now, she’s bringing those worlds together, expanding The Dying World with new characters, voices, and settings.
The timing couldn’t be better. The Black Parade (20th Anniversary) features the original album alongside six bonus tracks, including three live recordings from the band’s 2007 hometown performance at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, New Jersey. The collection also includes the previously unreleased live recording of “Someone Out There Loves You.”
‘Prelude to The End’ will also screen ahead of My Chemical Romance’s final two Hollywood Bowl performances on October 30 and 31, wrapping up the U.S. leg of the band’s massive The Black Parade 2026 Tour before heading to Asia.
Twenty years after The Black Parade first made its mark, My Chemical Romance continues to find new ways to expand its creative universe. And with Lauren Tsai helping lead the way, this latest collaboration looks like a fitting tribute to an album that has inspired generations of artists and fans.
