A summer friendship, an unexpected tragedy and the complicated road to growing up take center stage in MOUSE, the new independent drama from filmmakers Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson (Saint Frances, Ghostlight).
Set in North Little Rock, Arkansas, in the summer of 2002, the film follows Minnie Dunn (Katherine Mallen Kupferer), a reserved teenager whose world is turned upside down after a tragic accident takes the life of her best friend, Callie (Chloe Coleman). Struggling with grief and an uncertain future, Minnie develops an unexpected connection with Callie’s mother, played by Academy Award nominee Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda).
The impressive cast also includes Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel), David Hyde Pierce (Frasier) and Tara Mallen.
Written by O’Sullivan and inspired in part by her own experiences growing up in Arkansas, MOUSE explores friendship, family, identity and the difficult transition into adulthood. The film also carries a personal connection for the filmmaker, who dedicated it to her late mother.
Following its world premiere at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival and appearances at several other festivals, MOUSE is heading to U.S. theaters November 13.
If you’re looking for something a little more thoughtful than the usual coming-of-age drama, this one deserves a spot on your watchlist.
