Chicago Soul Jazz Collective returns with No Wind & No Rain, a bold and deeply soulful fourth album that feels like the group’s most complete artistic statement yet. Led by saxophonist John Fournier and featuring powerhouse vocalist Dee Alexander, the seven-piece ensemble continues to blend jazz, soul, blues, gospel, and folk into a sound that reflects both the history and spirit of Chicago.
Produced by guitarist Larry Brown Jr., the album balances polished arrangements with raw energy, capturing the grit and warmth that define the city. The record also marks another major step in the band’s evolution, which began in 2017 with a small weekly residency in Berwyn, Illinois. What started as a passion project inspired by classic soul jazz records quickly grew into a celebrated live act with a loyal following.
Throughout No Wind & No Rain, themes of perseverance and hope remain front and center. The opening track, “The Laughing Heart,” bursts with funky energy, while songs like “A Town Called Mercy” and “Message to a Child” bring emotional depth and reflection. Dee Alexander’s vocals are magnetic throughout, moving effortlessly between tenderness, power, and groove.
The title track stands out as the emotional centerpiece of the album, combining layered horns, soulful rhythms, and a message about staying strong during difficult times.
The album’s closing stretch leaves a lasting impression, moving from reflection toward optimism without ever feeling overly polished or predictable. “On the Way to Be Free” and “There is Light Somewhere” bring a sense of release and emotional openness, while “A Groove for Ramsey” serves as both a tribute to Chicago legend Ramsey Lewis and a celebration of the city’s enduring musical influence.
Chicago Soul Jazz Collective successfully honors the traditions that shaped them while continuing to push their sound forward, creating a record that feels timeless, uplifting, and deeply connected to one of the greatest cities in the world.
