After six years of silence, Darkest Dungeon is getting back in the fire.
Red Hook Studios has released The Fire’s Edge, a surprise new DLC for the acclaimed turn-based RPG roguelite. It’s available today on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One for $6.99 USD, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players able to jump in through backward compatibility. Nintendo Switch players only have to wait until August 20.
And yes, it brings some fresh pain to the Hamlet.
Two New Heroes, Plenty of New Trouble
The headline additions are The Runaway and The Duelist, two heroes carrying combat ideas from Darkest Dungeon II into the original game.
The Runaway brings fire to the battlefield with the new Burn mechanic, while the Duelist relies on a more disciplined, deadly fighting style. Both add new strategies—and, naturally, new ways for an expedition to go horribly wrong.
The DLC also introduces:
- Three new Districts: Academie Duello, Craftworks, and Archaeological Base Camp
- New Trinkets featuring effects such as Trigger Uses, Quest Charges, and transformations
- New Town Events to shake up life in the Hamlet
- New rewards, weekly bounties, and damage boosts for heroes
- Expanded combat and trinket mechanics for modders
Red Hook is also promising an improved mod manager in a follow-up update planned for later this month.
A Fiery Return for a 10-Year-Old Classic
Darkest Dungeon originally entered Early Access in 2015 before its full release in 2016. Now, as the game celebrates its 10th anniversary, The Fire’s Edge gives veterans a reason to return—and newcomers a surprisingly good excuse to discover why the original became such a beloved indie RPG.
It’s also the game’s fifth DLC, following The Crimson Court, The Shieldbreaker, The Color of Madness, and the PC-exclusive The Butcher’s Circus.
Six years after its last content update, Darkest Dungeon has found a new way to make the road to the Hamlet even more dangerous.
The Fire’s Edge is out now on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with the Nintendo Switch version arriving August 20.
And if you’re ready to see just how hot things are getting, there’s a new trailer waiting to set the mood.
