Los Angeles-based musician and producer Matt Koenig, the mind behind The Undercover Dream Lovers, has unveiled the official video for his latest single, “Prom Queen.” Departing from his signature fuzzy dream-pop, Koenig embraces an ELO-meets-Phoenix palette of shimmering synths, crisp guitar chops, and weeping strings. The track opens with the whir of a VHS tape, immediately transporting listeners to a nostalgic late ’90s/early 2000s world.
“Prom Queen” explores perspectives on youth and memory, flipping between an alt-punk teen skipping prom and a mother reflecting on her own prom queen days. Koenig explains, “It’s about letting go of the idea that you need to be seen or act a certain way to feel worthy or appreciated.”
Directed by Alex LaLiberté and Grant Spanier, the video was shot run-and-gun across LA locations including the Teen Wolf set and Mustang Motel, echoing the song’s blend of intimacy and cinematic flair.
From his Pittsburgh bedroom recordings at 14 to his current Los Angeles soundscapes, Koenig crafts songs as immersive emotional architecture. “Prom Queen” is not just nostalgia—it’s a vibrant, human reflection on memory, perspective, and letting go.
