Experimental rock veterans LIARS are back with a new track, “Beat Creep Some Eyes,” offering another glimpse into their upcoming 11th studio album, A Ban On Plastic Bag Bans, arriving March 5, 2027.
The accompanying video, created by visual collaborator Clemens Habicht, features unusual 3D imagery captured by frontman Angus Andrew using an obsolete 3D camera in and around Kalamazoo, Michigan. The surreal visuals fit the track’s twisting, unpredictable sound, playing with perception and the uneasy feeling that reality isn’t always what it seems.
The new album draws heavily from Andrew’s experiences after relocating to Kalamazoo with his family. There, he became involved in a campaign against a local packaging factory accused of releasing dangerous pollutants into the surrounding community. His experience with environmental concerns, corporate influence and frustrating bureaucratic obstacles became the unlikely inspiration for the record.
Even the album’s title has a real-world connection. A Ban On Plastic Bag Bans references an actual Michigan law preventing local governments from banning single-use plastic bags. For Andrew, it became a fitting example of the strange contradictions and institutional roadblocks he encountered.
Rather than delivering a straightforward protest record, LIARS explore how absurd situations and everyday injustices can gradually become part of the background of ordinary life. It’s an unsettling concept that fits the band’s long history of pushing experimental music into unexpected territory.
Formed in New York in 2000, LIARS have built a reputation for constantly reinventing themselves across albums like They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top, Drums Not Dead and The Apple Drop. For the new record, Andrew reunites with drummer Laurence Pike and multi-instrumentalist Cameron Deyell, embracing improvisation and an intuitive creative process.
A Ban On Plastic Bag Bans arrives March 5, 2027, and looks set to be one of the band’s most personal and thought-provoking releases yet.
