We Contain Multitudes, a new instrumental psych-rock trio formed by veterans of the post-hardcore scene, have announced their debut album Minako, set for release on June 25, 2025, via Expert Work Records. The group features Jon Fine (ex-Bitch Magnet, Vineland), Orestes Morfín (Bitch Magnet, Walt Mink), and Simon Kobayashi (smallgang, Hurtling). Their first single, the dense and hypnotic “Can We Just Not?,” is out now.
Fine and Morfín’s roots go back to 1987 when Orestes joined Bitch Magnet, a band that helped define American post-hardcore before disbanding in 1990. Their records were reissued in 2011, leading to a reunion tour that included a London show where they first encountered Kobayashi. His playing left a mark — so much so that when Fine and Morfín formed We Contain Multitudes years later, they immediately called him in.
Recorded by Abe Seiferth (Car Seat Headrest, Nation Of Language) and co-produced by Seiferth and the band, Minako dives deep into psychedelic and minimalist-maximalist territory, drawing inspiration from the likes of King Crimson, Explosions in the Sky, and late-era Black Flag. It’s a bold double album spread across three sides of vinyl, with only 300 copies pressed — 50 of them in a special orange variant.
The album’s name, Minako (pronounced mih-NAH-ko), nods to Japanese city-pop singer Minako Yoshida, a touch added by Kobayashi, whose heritage shaped the album’s title. Fine explains the band’s instrumental approach: “You can get to different emotional nuances, more emotional extremes, without words… you can’t quite name it, but it’s really profound.”
